A STRATEGIC PRIORITY FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR COMPANIES

News

As businesses move toward integrating environmental sustainability into their core operations, reducing their carbon footprint becomes a key element in driving a green revolution.

In an era where environmental sustainability is at the forefront of global discussions, actively committing to lowering carbon emissions is now essential for companies across all sectors. Businesses play a pivotal role in achieving the target of carbon neutrality by 2050.

What is Carbon Footprint and how is it calculated?

A carbon footprint represents the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted by human activities, expressed in tons of CO₂ equivalent. This evaluation includes direct emissions, such as those from transportation and heating, as well as indirect emissions linked to energy production and the environmental impact of goods and services.

Calculating a carbon footprint requires analyzing emissions from all greenhouse gases, using global parameters established by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This process takes into account every stage of the value chain—from raw material extraction to waste disposal—through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. Two widely recognized and effective methodologies are: the GHG Protocol and the ISO 14064 standard.

GHG Protocol

The GHG Protocol is a set of standards and guidelines developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). It is designed to help companies, cities, and countries measure, manage, and report their greenhouse gas emissions. It provides cross-sectoral tables and emissions data for various industries, enabling reliable reporting of all six greenhouse gases recognized under the Kyoto Protocol.

ISO 14064 Series

The ISO 14064 standard provides a set of guidelines for quantifying, monitoring, reporting, and verifying greenhouse gas emissions. It forms the foundation for transparent and consistent emissions management, both at organizational and project levels, and promotes the adoption of sustainable practices in industry.

  • ISO 14064-1 focuses on GHG inventories at the organizational level.
  • ISO 14064-2 details GHG project-level emission reductions.
  • ISO 14064-3 covers verification and validation of GHG declarations.

Other related standards, such as ISO 14065 and ISO 14066, define requirements for validation/verification bodies and the competencies of auditing teams.

Why does it mnatter for companies?

Carbon footprint monitoring is not only crucial for evaluating environmental and energy efficiency, but it also plays a strategic role in business planning, guiding companies toward more sustainable practices. Reducing carbon emissions is essential to minimize resource exploitation and align with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria, fostering a lower environmental impact.

These tools provide the foundation for measuring carbon emissions and encouraging the adoption of effective strategies to reduce energy costs. In addition to benefiting the bottom line, this approach can open doors to incentive programs increasingly focused on environmental sustainability. Demonstrating a real commitment to reducing environmental impact also strengthens a company’s perceived quality and green reputation in the eyes of customers.

Our journey toward a more sustainable future

As we transition to a greener future, companies have both the opportunity and the responsibility to lead the way toward positive environmental change. Iglom has embraced this call, making significant investments in clean and renewable technologies, optimizing energy resource use, and adopting a circular economy model to reduce fossil fuel dependence.

By voluntarily joining the 2022 Sustainability Report for the Tuscan Chemical Sector, Iglom reaffirmed its commitment to building a carbon-neutral future, integrating innovation and sustainability into its business strategies.

Moreover, in line with our path of continuous improvement, Iglom has implemented an Integrated Management System for Quality and Environment based on international standards ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, pursuing ambitious goals for ongoing advancement.
